Draft day is finally here! I have been racking my brains trying to figure out who The packers will pick with their first round pick! Will they trade up? Will they trade down? They'll probably stand pat. What to do then? Okay, why did they lose to The Cardinals in the wildcard game? My conclusion? No pass rush on Kurt Warner! They need a LOLB to help Clay Mathews.

The "REAL" Draft experts expect Ted Thompson to trade up possibly into the top 12. I on the other hand expect him to trade down. The strength of the draft is DB's, OLB and O-line. The true value is in the 2nd and 3rd rounds. I think a perfect trade partner would be Mike Holmgren and The Cleveland Browns. Pick 23 is valued at 760 points. Cleveland has picks in the 2nd and 3rd round that total 760. That being said let's make a deal Mike! Here's my Packer Picks base on that thinking:

1. Mike Iupati OL Idaho I like this guy! Nasty demeanor and very verasitile which is a must in the Packer system. Could move to tackle but will probably play Guard. Iupati could start as a rookie. The Packers need to protect their franchise QB!

2. Myron Lewis CB Vanderbilt After watching Minnesota, Pittsburgh and Arizona carve up the Packer secondary it's clear to see they need help! Lewis is a big corner with good speed and ball skills. A year or two behind Charles Woodson won't hurt this kids future!

3.Daryl Washington OLB TCU Finding another Pass Rushing OLB to play opposite Clay Mathews will make Mathews that more dangerous. Washington is a little undersized but has 4.59 speed and is a great athlete!

1. TYSON JACKSON DE LSU THE SAFEST D-LINE PICK. TYSON IS 6-5 295 POUNDS AND IS A PERFECT FIT FOR THE 3-4 DEFENSE. SIMILAR PLAYER TO VONNIE HOLIDAY. WILL CONTRIBUTE IN 2009! OTHER OPTIONS: ANDRE SMITH, MICHAEL OHER, BJ RAJI, MALCOM JENKINS, ROBERT AYERS, AARON MAYBIN AND BRIAN ORACKPO. WILD CARD PICKS: MICHAEL CRABTREE AND KNOWSHON MORENO

2. PHIL LOADHOLT T OKLAHOMA A NEED PICK. LOADHOLT IS THE BEST TACKLE LEFT ON THE BOARD AND WILL HAVE A CHANCE TO START AT RT THIS SEASON. AT 6-8 335 AND A HUGE WINGSPAN HE COULD HOLD DOWN THE RIGHT TACKLE SPOT FOR 10 YEARS

I'M STARTING TO THINK THOMPSON WILL TRADE DOWN UNLESS ONE OF HIS PLAYERS FALLS TO HIM INCLUDING WR MICHAEL CRABTREE. MOST OF THE REMAINING PLAYERS HE COVETS WILL BE AROUND BETWEEN PICKS 15 AND 20.

1. TYSON JACKSON DE LSU
PERFECT 3-4 DEFENSIVE END AROUND 6-5 295 POUNDS WITH PASS RUSH ABILITY. JACKSON WILL PUSH FOR A STARTING JOB IMMEDIATELY. FILLS A HUGE NEED!

2. CLINT SINTIM OLB VIRGINIA IF CLINT IS STILL ON THE BOARD I BELIEVE HE WILL BE A PACKER. HE'S BIG, STRONG AND FAST AND WOULD BE IDEAL AS A OLB IN DOM CAPERS NEW 3-4 DEFENSE!

3. JAIRUS BYRD CB OREGON BYRD IS A BALLHAWK! PARDON THE PUN!!! 17 PICKS IN 3 SEASONS AT OREGON. SON OF FORMER NFL PLAYER GIL BYRD.

3. TRAVIS BECKUM TE WISCONSIN DID YOU SEE TEDDY FOLLOWING BECKUM AROUND AT THE BADGER PRO DAY? HE HAD A TWINKLE IN HIS EYE AND BECKUM RAN A 4.5 FORTY. THEY HAVEN'T HAD A TE WITH SPEED SINCE KEITH JACKSON AND OH YEAH THEY WON THE SUPER BOWL THAT YEAR!!!

I need to make this quick. Sales come first you know?? Anyway until The Packers get going on free agency it's going to be tough to pin point the position and or positions they will target in the draft but I do think as of today they have a big need at the opposite ROLB position opposite of Aaron Kampman. So here's the choices.

1. Brian Cushing OLB USC A true OLB that can flurish in the new 3-4 defense.

2. Darius Butler CB UCon Playmaker with 4.4 speed. Will need a year under Harris
and Woodson then lookout!

3. Eric Wood OL Lousiville Versitile lineman fits into the mix imediatley.

3. Evander Hood DT Miss No relation to Estus! Another big body for the rotation

4. Travis Beckum TE Wiskey A steal if he's healthy!

I'll be keeping my mock draft the same until after the combine. Next week I'll add a new 4 round Packer Mock Draft. My good friend Hawk Fan will be joining The Blog today. He'll unveil his first 2009 Packer Mock. As I was driving around today listening to great draft talk on AM 1570 my thoughts turned to the offensive side of the ball. The Wide Receiver position in general. You would think this is a position of strength, but is it really? Will this be Donald Driver's last year with The Packers? Will Thompson get Greg Jennings signed to a long term deal or will he test free agency after the 2009 season? Will the future be Jordy Nelson, James Jones and Ruvell Martin?? Thompson has drafted a WR in either the 2nd or 3rd round since he's been a GM with Green Bay.
I think this trend will continue but here's a crazy thought!! What if Texas Tech stud Receiver Michael Crabtree drops to pick number 9?? How can Thompson pass on this future Pro Bowler if he takes "The Best Player Available" as he says they do?? The answer is he won't. Crabtree would give Aaron Rodgers another huge target and make the Packer Offense that much better. Chances of this happening are slim but it's fun to say what if??

PACKER 3 ROUND MOCK DRAFT 2/13/09

It's that time of year again. Yes my favorite time of the year, NFL Draft Talk!! I'll be blogging on The Score's website through the draft and I'll do occasional updates throughout the year.
Well lets begin! We all know the Packers need help on the defensive side of the ball. I still think Crazy Joe Devola (Ted Thompson) will continue to take his "Best Player Available" stance as he should with the 2009 draft class. I have to believe if one of the top 3 Offensive Tackles Virginia's Eugene Monroe, Alabama Tackle Andre Smith or Baylor's Jason Smith drop to pick number 9 one of them will be a Packer. But most Mock Drafts have all three gone before The Packers pick at number 9. That being said I believe on February 13th the best player on the board will be.......

Packer 3 Round Mock:

1. B.J. Raji DT Boston College
B.J.'s stock is rising after his dominating preformance at The Senior Bowl. His practices were off the charts but the game itself was mediocre. Still he would fill a tremendous void as a running stuffing NT with pass rush ability. It all starts up front with Dom Capers 3-4 scheme and Raji is the man to help get the new defense off to a good start!

2. Clay Matthews Jr. OLB USC
Comes from a great football family, his Uncle Bruce was a Houston Oiler Teddys old team. Was projected as a 2nd day pick before the season now may sneak into the first round. If he last's until this pick consider him a Packer. Should be a starter from day one lining up as a "Outside Linebacker". He'll also impove The Packers special teams!

3. Eric Wood C Louisville
Wood is a prospect with tremendous potential and versatility which is required in the Packers Zone Blocking system. For the third straight year Thompson's takes a Offensive Lineman from The University of "Loo A Ville"

3. (From The Jets) Connor Barwin DE Cincinnati The Brett Favre pick! Smart money says this pick is traded for several lower picks but if the Packers stand pat Barwin would be too good to pass up. Barwin projects as a pass rushing linebacker in the 3-4. He lead the BearCats in sacks in 2008 and is said to be a coaches dream.
